Have questions about Flight Basketball? We have put together a few of the most common questions asked about the organization and league. Have a question for us? Contact us today and we’ll gladly provide the answer!
What is the difference between school basketball and Flight basketball?
School basketball is played for your child’s school team. Players must typically live within the designated catchment area to participate (unless special circumstances apply). Programs are insured and governed by BC School Sports, and practices and games are scheduled by the school to represent their teams at various events. In School District 60, each team is required to have a paid teacher sponsor, and teams must travel together to and from tournaments on a district bus.
Club basketball operates independently of the school system. There are no catchment restrictions—any player who wishes to join Flight may do so, regardless of where they live. We are insured through Basketball BC and follow Canada Basketball training guidelines. Our competitive teams represent the broader Peace Region at tournaments and events, with athletes from communities such as Fort St. John, Charlie Lake, Montney, Rose Prairie, Taylor, Wonowon, Dawson Creek, Farmington, and beyond. Flight provides more structured training, longer seasons, increased travel and exposure opportunities, and a higher level of competition. We do not provide a team or club bus; parents are responsible for arranging transportation for their child to and from practices, tournaments, and events. As a fully volunteer‑run organization, we rely on the commitment, support and involvement of our community to make our club successful.
If my child has never played basketball before, can they still join Flight?
Yes, absolutely. Flight welcomes beginners, and our recreational programs are designed to teach the basics in a fun, supportive environment so kids can learn, build confidence, and enjoy the game even if it’s their first time playing.
How is the registration fee calculated?
Registration fees are set based on the actual costs of running each program, including tournament fees, facility rentals, coach benefits, equipment, uniforms, referees, insurance, and administrative expenses. We work hard to keep fees as affordable as possible while still providing quality coaching, safe facilities, and a well-organized basketball experience for every player.
I see you are offering a range of 16 months within each competition division. Does this mean if my child is born in October that they have to play down?
No. A 16‑month age range is designed to give us flexibility so players can be placed where they’re safest and most appropriately challenged, not to force kids with later birthdays to ‘play down.’ If your child is born between September – December, you will have the option to decide which division would be a better fit for your child. Coaches will look at their age, skill level, and overall fit before confirming which division would be best for your child’s development and experience.
Our child wants to play basketball but we don’t have the means to travel. Can they still play?
Yes, they can still play. Our recreational program is entirely local, so families do not need to travel—your child can enjoy practices and games right here in the community without the added cost or time of out‑of‑town trips. If your child is set on playing at the competitive level, many parents car pool, so you may be able to make arrangements for your child to compete without having to travel to every tournament.
How much do I have to be involved?
We ask families to be involved in a reasonable, manageable way. At a minimum, this means staying informed, getting your child to practices and games on time, and completing the required volunteer hours, which you can schedule around what works best for your family. Because we are entirely volunteer run, we depend on the commitment and support of everyone involved to make our club a success.
